Also called Bachkovo Monastery ‘Assumption of the Holy Virgin’ , it is one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Bulgaria. Bachkovo Monastery is a beautiful example of Orthodox Christian architecture. It was first established in 1083 by the great Domestic of the West Grigorii Bakuriani under the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Alexis I Komnin. After surviving almost a thousand years , now the buildings are in a very good condition.
The Bachkovo Monastery is just 30 km south of Plovdiv.
